I’d still like to know what the details were. How far away from our coast was it shot down? How high was it when it was shot down? Hypothetically, if there was a nuke on board, what would be the nuclear fallout from it? Would such a blown up nuke still cause an emp? What would the effects be if there was an emp on the west coast/ western US?

North Korea warns of bigger ‘gift package’ to US after missile test
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2017/05/30 … -test.html

On Tuesday, the U.S. military is expected to test for the first time a interceptor missile — used to shoot down a intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

This is the first time the U.S. military has attempted to test a ground-based interceptor against an “intercontinental class target,” The Missile Defense Agency confirmed to Fox News.

Anyone see any news on this test? I haven’t seen anything yet.

Yes, I actually watched the interview on TV, outstanding man, that was the last question that was asked of him.

I was fortunate to meet General James Mattis and General John Kelly years ago when my two brothers in law and I were visiting the Vietnam momorial. They weren’t Generals then, only LtCol.

Wow, what an honor!

Special Report on Fox just did a piece on emp and the threat from N. Korea. They also mention that any legislation to harden the grid hasn’t made it out of committee. I’ll be very surprised if congress does anything! All the more reason to prep.

On a great note, I gave a good friend the book, One Second After, to read. He stopped by this afternoon. He read half of it so far and his mind is spinning. He asked a ton of questions. I think we have a new prepper on our hands.

If you are talking Japanese beetles, those pheromone traps work good. Just don’t put them close to the plants you are trying to protect. Put them up wind of the plants you want to protect at least 50 yards. If you put them to close to the plants, you will just attract them to your plants.

Sevin (Carbaryl)works real good on them just do not use on pome fruit right at fruit set, they will thin fruit, unless it is your intention. After fruit is over 20 mm it will not thin and can be used with no fruit loss. We use it on bad years for J beetles, but we don’t see them here in Vermont for another month.

I don’t think that is right. You might not need any protection in a CME (I am not sure about that) but I think an EMP will fry anything with any long conductors (wires) in it, or attached to it . Also, you cannot protect whatever you are using when it hits.

Sorry, I should have said, “they had a copper lined bag to protect the the gennie”, …when not in use …..

Trex, thanks for the posts. I’ve been racking my mind about this. I do have some smaller devices in a trash can sealed with metalized tape, but I’m interested in protecting larger things, in particular, I am researching solar generators. I’ve got a barn with a metal roof that is not hooked up to power, I just use a gas gennie when needed. I’m considering a solar one to use there and as a backup for the house, but am hesitant because I am nervous about making that $ commitment only to see it get fried by an emp or cme unless I could protect it.

Also you mentioned protecting solar panels. I just watched a video on a solar gennie, and they had a copper lined bag to protect the the gennie, but said you did not have to protect the solar panels. Now I’m really confused! :?

Any thought? Thanks!

P.S. Any thoughts by you or anyone on solar gennies big enough to power average household power needs in a grid down situation would be greatly appreciated.

Speaking of emp, we had a wind storm that hit our county. A city just south of me was hard hit, 75 mph winds, power poles snapped in half, it was a real mess. The power company shut the power off to the whole city as there were so many live wires down in the roads.

We had power, but word got around and we took a ride to go check it out and check on my wife’s sister. Her road was a mess. We did have to go off road a bit, but we made it to her house. She was freaked out.Playing nervously with her hair constantly, she said, “I’m about to have a nervous breakdown.” So I drove the half hour back to my house, get my gennie, lights, lanterns, bottled water, bring them back, and hook everything up for her. As prepared as we are, she is the total opposite! She got a little tongue lashing from my wife and I both, and she said she couldn’t get a few things together cause she lives paycheck to paycheck. Yet she has a barn full of crap she never uses. Tables, chairs, mirrors, etc…..I told her it’s time for a garage sale and time to start becoming more self sufficient.

General Preparedness Discussion • Re: MAY 2017 – What Did You Do To Prep This Week/Month?

May 7, 2017 theoutback 0

Busy time in my orchards. Pest monitoring, trying to suppress scab, burning and running fans at 3 AM to cut down on loss from frost, and got some grafting done. ( see pic) My orchards are how we make extra money for preps. My wife and I also have other full time jobs.

We also got started on a 16 x 30 cider barn. It has a cellar that we are building a false wall in. One part of that room will be made of foil lined insulation to use as a big faraday cage.

Waiting on the contractor today. We’ll probably be picking up the debris and getting it burned, if the rain stops.

I also like how Ice Fire and I planted almost exactly the same plants! :)

My peach tree has lots of peaches on it – I’m trying to determine the best way to keep the deer away from it. Any ideas are welcome.

Fence it. 15 to 20′ piece of 5′ welded wire or concrete wire. one stake to hold it in place. Fencing is the best way.

General Canning Topics • Canning Jar sale

May 2, 2017 theoutback 0

Wally World had quart canning jar cases on sale for $5 today, regularly $8.69. Not a bad deal, I never seem to see them on sale around here. I’m not sure if it would be the same at your local Walmart, but it might be worth a look see.

Canning jars are definitely in our preps. We’ve got about an extra dozen cases over what we normally use. I would really like to get that number up quite a bit.

For those of you who don’t know, marines would give their all to save a corpsman and the gesture was reciprocated by corpsmen.
I’m gonna let you slide, using the term “squid”. Usually only squids could call other squids “squid”.
We might have run into each other if my orders weren’t changed. I was going to be sent to the 3rd (?) Marines in Okinawa and then to Nam in

General Homesteading Topics • Tick Tubes

April 26, 2017 theoutback 0

If your place is anything like mine, you are infested w/ ticks. This makes a lot of sense to me. The key to pest control is breaking the life cycle, this shows that they are trying to do this, not just simple put a bandaid on the aftermath. I deal in pest control quite extensively in my orchards and I can tell you, breaking the lifecycle is how you bring pest levels down. In theory this seems to have merit. I’m going to give it a try.

Has anyone tried this?

YES! FREEZE!
Freezing kills larvae (eggs) & bugs in the grain product. Freeze in your freezer … NOT in the winter cold outside (it’s not cold enough). -k

??? It get’s far more cold outside than in my freezer at certain times of year up here.

This is kind of a strange prep/ mini shtf situation, but I’m home recovering from surgery and will be out of work for at least a month, so in order to save money we are making a strong effort to rotate out food stores. We’ve got over a year’s worth stored so it won’t be a huge dent. My wife wanted to clean out/rotate the freezer foods anyways. We had rice based dinners twice, and tuna twice this week. We are going to work in some beans, maybe I’ll make some chilli. We need to make some soups too.

Angie, we’ve eaten rice from 5/6 yo mylar bags that seemed pretty well sealed but not as sucked in as others. They were fine. I don’t know from experience about storing rice loose, but I’d like to hear that answer too. Not just an opinion, but from someone that has actually done it and checked on it after say 6-10 years.
