When we first started on our prepping journey in 2011, we started right here on APN. We set up a meeting at a State Park and 3 folks showed up. We were all very guarded. Two of those folks became great friends for a time. We started meeting at a local restaurant, had a campout or two and that went on for a couple years. People came and went. We only had a couple folks out to our house – one who helped with a radio and another couple we hung out with some.
After a few years we stopped having the meetings so we could focus on our BOL that we eventually moved to and established our homestead.

To make a point, you have to be guarded but not so much as you don’t learn anything or are off putting to others. We met know it all jerks, we met really nice people, we learned a lot, and most of all, we grew in our prepper journey. You may not stick with the group forever or you may make some forever friends. It’s all in what you make it.

Thanks. :tank:

I would try to get a little more info from this person, I’m sure she would be the one to introduce you to this group.
If they broke up due to security issues – why ?
Ask what kind of people are in this group – LEO, Doctors, ex-military,families w/kids, etc..? ? ?
Depending on the size of this group, where would your meet-up be, dinner, park, someones home ?
Play dumb but not to dumb, they want you as an asset.
Don’t give up to much info, or talk about your preps (guns, gold and food) your there to learn.
Watch when you leave and if any one should follow.
Just some ideas to work with.

Yes, everything Yeti_2015 said!
Personally I would not let anyone in my house. I worked at a job for 15 years and not one of those people I worked with had ever been to my house. There were only 2 who even knew where I lived and that I would have trusted to let in.
If I were to go to a meeting I would be there “just to learn because I really haven’t gotten anything started yet and feel I need to do something”.

If you have any skills for prepping (canning, hunting, etc.) I would probably low ball that too and just say something like “I’ve been thinking about trying some canning”.
For me it takes a very long time to build trust in a person. I don’t really know why, have just always been wary of people.

All that being said, when you find a good person, I would hang on to them. We have been wanting to do some major upgrades to our house, but haven’t because there are not any contractors we feel we can trust. Well we purchased the property below us that had termite damage, and the pest control people sent out a couple contractors to fix it. OMG they were awesome. Polite, conservative, christian, cleaned up, and did an outstanding repair job. Even leveled a door we thought we were going to have to replace. So I got cards from them for friends who are in the same boat we are, with not sure who to trust. I could have walked those guys past a closet full of MRE’s and would have been totally comfortable with it, and that is VERY unusual for me. Obviously this isn’t the norm, go with your gut feelings and spend lots of time observing the others.

DR1VENbyKNOWLEDGE, thank you. It’s hard to find like minded people that you can trust. I hope that my failures will help others.

I had the same issue when at my last job, but I did move on. I’m now about 2 hours away and I have not had any contact with anyone in that office since.

^^^This is really good advice^^^ ……. The whole post actually, but especially the quote above.

I was horrible on OPSEC at my onset and will absolutely have issues if SHTF actually ever happens from my BIG FAT MOUTH trying to get others prepping with me over the years…I can NEVER get it back unless I move with the damage I did.

Nothing feels quite as unnerving as a non-close work associate stating loudly in a office “If the apocalypse ever happens I’m going to your house!!!…ha, ha, ha….”

So, with past mistakes as my teacher, really good advice above from Yeti

Ok you live in Oklahoma, I would use the natural disasters and the idea for being prepared for them as a jump off for conversations. Maybe all the civil unrest in the country. Try not to get to caught up in the racial/political side of this. I would not in any way disclose how much supplies you have, if you have a BOL and a plan to get there keep that to yourself. Any major things other than just maybe a few weeks of supplies, not more than a month. Again being an Okie guns are good, but if you have an AR15, don’t tell them you have 1000 rounds or more. Don’t disclose all the weapons and ammo you have. Be as vague as possible with what you have. Take time just to listen to other talking in the room, don’t make it like you are just eaves dropping, but if someone is talking like he has all the supplies he need to survive for ever, this is someone that will tell everyone else what he has. Also avoid the ones that have more guns and ammo than sense. Listening to people around the room will help you find out who will be people that you might want to get to know better, but also might give you some insight on people to avoid.

To be honest I have wanted to try to get out and meet more preppers, but some of the ones that I have met have been way over the top anti-government. I won’t let them get me into any trouble for their beliefs. Others that live in the cities that find out I live in the middle of know where, want to use my house as their BOL and want to store items here. I won’t be responsible for a bunch of stuff from people that I don’t really know. Or have them bringing other people here that I haven’t even met. I have met a few more, that over time that life just got in the way and they just didn’t have the time anymore. I understand that part, life can pull you into so many directions. I rely mostly on my parents, but they are 3 hours away and are in bad health.

Hope this helps sorry for the long post. Just sharing some of my thoughts and experience.

Hello everyone,

I am a program producer for TRT World, an international news and current affairs channel.

We are currently filming a documentary series titled ‘Route 66’ where we travel along the historic route and take a look at issues faced by Americans.

We want to film an episode on Liberty in the North Texas (Amarillo) / Mid Oklahoma area close to the historic route and we were wondering if any preppers would be willing to talk to us and tell us what Liberty means to them.

To give you guys a better idea, here are two films the same filmmaker making this documentary has done for our company:

I would appreciate any help!
Have a great day!
