General California Discussion, News and Weather • Re: Harvey – Irma Survivers/ Preppers

September 15, 2017 kenjabroni 0

FP thanks for the summary. Glad you and the poochies are doing fine. Its nice to see what worked and what needed some fine tuning. I always hate to see people having to ride out the storms like this but its always nice to see someone who is trying to be ready and prepared make it through the events alright. You had some great recommendations that I need to get shored up in my belongings.

5 years or so ago the wife son and I were living in southern MS and a very minor hurricane came ashore. We were living in an rv at the time and we werent prepared for anything honestly. I had a weapon and that was the extent of it. The in laws had a condo there and we were allowed to stay there. The son and I went and got sandbags to make a barrier around the front door. That was a challenge. We learned real quick to not both carry the bags to the car at the same time. People didnt mind taking what we had worked to fill. The wife and son went to lowes to get plywood for the windows while I was at my new job at the time. They cut what we needed and every window was just big enough that we couldnt get two pieces out of a sheet. It was okay though because there was a pastor there looking for anyone that could donate anything to help him and his church out. The wife gave him 4 or 5 almost half sheets of plywood that we didnt need and he was so grateful because he hadnt been able to get much up to that point. We arent the most religious people but we are good people and help out people when we can and to those who are in need.

We lost power the day the storm came onto land. It blew some stuff around and caused some very minor flooding. I thought we would have power back soon. 1 day turned into 4 miserable days. MS heat and humidity………SUCKS when you have no power and no air circulation. I slept on the kitchen floor because it was the only cool place. My son slept on the tile next to the front door. Needless to say we didnt sleep much. What was crazy about the entire situation was that there was power across the street from us the entire 4 days. Thank goodness we were able to go and eat and such because places were open, but we were not prepared for even those 4 days food or water wise. Im glad that I am more ready now and I know I have a long ways to go but at least I can have some peace of mind knowing we are good for a little bit especially with some of the weather blowing through this year.

Driven I just noticed this thread.

First thing is my wife started having anxiety attacks Friday and they ran through the weekend. She has had them in the past but she wasnt sure what would trigger it this time. She said she didnt know what was happening but something wonky was going on with her body.

I was going to say I was feeling fine and had no issues but I got very ill Friday night around 1130. I woke up out of a dead sleep and just felt horrendous. I ended up puking and just feeling like crud. It took me about 3 hours to get back to sleep. I didnt feel better until Sunday afternoon. Im not sure if it was anything related but it hit me out of the blue. We were both very restless all weekend as well. I didnt have a full nights sleep until yesterday. You could be onto something.

People are just stupid. They look to take advantage of any situation. Later on when these businesses leave the neighborhood for good and stores sit empty for years these same people will cry because there are no shops or job opportunities in the areas they live………SMDH Its frustrating that it always seems to be the same people running in and stealing this stuff too. I dont know what they think they are going to do with those bags of cell phones they stole. I doubt they can just put in a card and use them. Im just baffled I guess because my momma would have beat my rear if I ever thought of doing that.

Pilgram…..be safe. Thoughts are with you but you sound like youre pretty good to go. Irma is a massive storm.

NJMike…..you need to get out of NJ. Holy smokes that is a bunch of bullhonky you have to go through there.

Ice……you make us all look like slackers HA. You are incredible with everything your doing and getting done up there.

Here on my little homestead I am expanding my protected chicken run and building a third coop. I may get into goats into the future but have zero knowledge and experience with any of that and any one of these pens ive made could be used with some minor adjusments to house a goat or three.

Ive started walking and now included some running into my time. My wife has been a huge motivator so I am trying to get back into some decent shape. Im really impressed with some of my running so far considering I snapped both bones in my lower right leg 2 years ago. I never thought itd happen. Especially with me still overweight and getting older. Im going to keep at it because its making me feel good. Now if Driven would lend me some abs…….HAHA

Welcome back Cat. You sure were busy while away.

My son joined the Navy and he was put into a computer field. Hes doing very well with it and the training will pay off greatly for him in the future no matter what course he decides to take with what hes learning. Your son will have many opportunities if hes able to get into that training. Tell him to study the free asvab testing online so he scores good on it because if he does then he can get just about any job he wants. Good luck to him.

Natural Disasters • Re: Gulf Coast Hurricane

September 1, 2017 kenjabroni 0

I drove to town today and a couple of stations had fuel on the way in that were out yesterday. Wal Mart seems to have gotten a shipment in but the lines were huge. I expect they will be out again today. They say that the refineries have fuel because their storage tanks were full before they shut down because of Harvey, its just taking longer to get the trucks filled up and sent out. Combine this all with a heavily traveled holiday weekend and here we have it.

Anita those doors that lock over the gas caps dont do much to prevent people getting in. A screwdriver or a knife could pop most of them open fairly easily. If people are desperate they will just punch a hole into your gas tank anyhow. Its crazy here, but I dont think its quite that crazy YET.

It was nice driving to town and back and not having to fight for fuel like a lot of the other yahoos out there. I have enough in bottles out here that I could fill up the car again and it gets very good mileage. I did have plans to goto Austin this weekend to stock up on things but it can wait. Im not in dire need of anything which is nice.

I live west of austin and we only got one inch of rain from the whole storm situation that Harvey brought. Today while I was at work I noticed a gas station about 35 minutes north of us had no fuel to purchase. I thought this was odd. I hadnt heard about any shortages. By the time I got back to town and such most gas stations were out. A couple had gas and a couple had diesel but none of them had both. I guess some social media scares went out and people were absolutely losing their minds. I know some of the refineries were shut down and such but Ive heard some were coming back online tomorrow. Im not sure if its because its Labor day weekend or what but it made me really wake up a bit. To me in this area, there was no reason for a concern such as this. I can only imagine if there was a nation wide emergency……it sure is an eye opener.

My daughter is in the Air Force in northern Japan and they had 3 missles fired at them today. 2 supposedly failed at launch or shortly thereafter but one got real close. It broke into three pieces and landed just off the northern side of the island. They had air raid sirens going off and the japanese announcements going off on the loud speakers. At first my daughter said she thinks they were launching to Guam and then told me later that they were the ones targeted there in Japan. Little scrappy must have ate his wheaties this morning I guess. With my daughter being somewhere around 10 minutes away from a missle attack you could say Im a nervous papa. Keeping my ear close to the ground. Most of the other stuff hes been doing was just chest puffing. This Im not so sure about.
