I so feel you on the sewing scissors. Luckily, my sewing room is in the old maid’s quarters in the attic, and it’s not a place that the kids normally go to look for that stuff. Now, in the old house? Heads rolled.Statistics: Posted by catfeet — Wed…

It’s not exactly soak in water. You want the plant to breathe. If you drop the seeds in a cup of water, you’ll kill them. So, what you do is this: Wet a paper towel, fold the seeds into it and put it in a zip lock. LABEL THE BAG. (This is something…

Well, plan on that changing again. We’re going into the Grand Solar Minimum again in a few years and it should be getting colder globally. I follow a guy on youtube who does this stuff. He’s a bit annoying, but has fairly decent science. Name of h…

There are a number of us here, but no meet-ups that I know of. Personally, this is my lifestyle, not my social circle, so while I talk about it online, that’s all I really have time to or want to do.
Good luck!

DS does know hoe to swim; we’ve a pool, but he’ll be taking the Red Cross lessons next summer because well, Navy! Unfortunately, we don’t have a swim team, though high school does offer lessons, which he’s taking right now. It’s pretty chilly though, being in the high sixties most days.
He’s also taking a number of computer courses in high school, we are a green ribbon tech high school. This semester he’s taking computers and networking, where, in his words, “we get to destroy them and build them back up!” He’s pretty happy about that course.

Hi Guys, I’m back for the first time in over a year. So, why so long? Well, I had hip surgery (SI joint fusion) and it’s taken me a while to get back to full strength and back into my life. I gave up all my forums, even FB. I get the other side done this fall/winter. What’s new in catfeet land you ask? Well,…
-Got chickens, dog ate chickens, built enclosure, got more chickens and turned the dog into animal control.
-The garden this year isn’t doing as well as I’d like, though the root veg are surprisingly happy.
-My peach tree fruited! It’s got so much fruit that I may have to sell some. (Peaches, in northern VT, who’d a thunk it?) It’s going to take me a serious week of canning to get thru all of them.
-I’ve joined a gym and am going 3-5 times a week.
-I got my water storage squared away and it’s now on racks.
-One more room in my house has been remodeled (by yours truly) and the breeze that was always running thru the house is now gone.
-Oldest son wants to join the navy, as, in his words “It’s a sound financial step mom” He’s 15, lol. They also are the only folks who have the training he wants – he’d like to go into computer cryptology. He’s taken active steps to do this, the first of which was to join the cross country team at school. It makes me proud to see him taking on this responsibility.
-There will be very few tomatoes this year. It’s been too wet and cold for them. It makes me sad because we’re OUT of salsa and nearly out of crushed tomatoes…I’ll have to buy some. GACK!
There’s a lot more, but these are my highlights, lol.

Indeed, many of which came from conservatives. Need I remind you of the “Obama is coming to to take our guns away” arguement that I’ve seen, as late as two weeks ago? Neither side is free from blame here, but continuing the argument, after you’ve won is like sticking out your tongue and saying “neener neener”. Being flat out mean to people, simply because you don’t agree with them is beneath us as Americans.
Catfeet, who doesn’t agree with any number of individuals, but who keeps her tongue behind her teeth so’s she doesn’t beat up on them

This year I’m planting (already in the ground) 4 new types of garlic and I’ve decided that it will be the year of the pepper and winter squash. I want to increase the types of both of those that I grow so that I have more variety in my seed collection. I’m also continuing to breed my “zone 4 perfect” tomato by crossing my existing strain with “granny Cantrell” for size.
I’ve so many catelogues that I run a spreadsheet to figure out where the best pricing is for all of the different things I want.
Oh, and onions! I grew my first successful onion crop last year and plan to do it again this year, but with more quantity and selection.

C’mon reb, really? She didn’t say anything political here. This whole “beat up anyone who says that they are liberal” thing, no matter what they are talking about is part of that whole volume control thing from the other thread. She wants to prep. Why alienate her? That is just going to push her away and take away the opportunity that this is. You are full of knowledge and I know you’re a good guy. Help her learn… that is the opportunity here; to show that and thru being kind, change her mind.
My mama always said two things – ok, she had so many of them that my sister and I started a list and left it on the fridge, but here are the applicable ones; you catch more flies with honey than vinegar, AND, if you can’t say something nice, then don’t say anything at all.
Catfeet, who knows that this opinion is probably going to catch her flack, and is therefore going to retreat to her metaphorical bunker (aka work) to wait for the fallout to be over

Retirement? Vacation? What are those? We’ll probably never retire (can’t) and I honestly can’t remember the last time we went on a real vacation. Working for a family business is no different than working for any other, except that you are related to the folks the profits go to benefit, and you can see all of the ins and outs on how all the parts work. That, and random conversations tend to be business related. You kinda get immersed in it all.

The poverty level is $11770/ individual in a tax year.
Middle class is defined by household numbers…an individual must make btn 24-73k to quallify. The more members, the higher the bottom number.
Tax shelters must be found and used. We are, dh and I, use as many as possible to make our income as low as possible. Dh has always worked for family businesses and is VERY good at tax planning. As such, we found an accountant who is very good at deductions, and this provides us with a very low taxable income. We are not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but the family overall is comfortable. Mil and fil made good real estate decisions in the late 60s, in the SF Bay Area, and we manage those funds in a Trust which has been invested in rental real estate. We tend to run showing losses, as that is the way to avoid income tax. I can guarantee you that folks who are in upper income brackets do the same.
