Terrorism & other Man made disasters • Re: Gas Mask questions

I can’t speak specifically to military surplus but the biggest issue with any respirator is fit.

It must conform to the fit of your face without any leakage. If your spouse has facial hair you can get fitted but it’s more difficult.

You’re already at a disadvantage if it’s a used mask as the seal was conformed to someone else.

Swamp, there is a fine line between price gouging & entrepeneurship. ;)

I was on the Indiana Toll Road during Hurricane Sandy. About 6-8 pickup trucks passed in a convoy, all headed east. And all stocked with portable gennies. New in their boxes.

Profiteering off the unprepared. We often speak of items to store for barter. These guys were thinking the same, just a much bigger scale.

Try a local supplier to the Amish.

Lehman’s advertises themselves as such. They got their roots as a hardware store in Ohio’s Amish country but it’s more of a tourist attraction now. Hand crank wash tub with wringer, soap making supplies, oil lamps, to name a few.

I was down there over 4th of July. Lots of really dumb looks on people’s faces. Kinda the same dumb looks at the Mennonite bulk store.

If this was Summer of ’67, wasn’t just The D that got lit up. Add Cleveland and Watts (LA) to that list.

I took a college class where the professor said there was a thought in these communities that if you set your own neighborhood on fire, HUD would come in and build you a brand new one. Didn’t happen. Most cities bulldozed the rubble and built parking lots.

If you poor, where you gonna go? These were the days before food stamps, Section 8, payday loans, VA disability, SSI.

Even Medicare didn’t come along ’till ’68.

Amen.

Not making light of anyone’s circumstances. I’ve been in a corner many times with seemingly no way out.

I had the good fortune to work with a retired Marine who gave me let’s say a “pep talk”one day years ago.

He told me “life has handed you a bunch of kwap. You have A but need B”. “Your goal in this life is to figure out that challenge and beat the ba$tards at their own game”.

I pay no attention to what my managers say but I carefully watch everything they do. Their actions and their statements rarely align.

For those who say you need to get out, but it’s not up to you, who is it up to? If someone else is calling the shots that keeps everyone in a risky situation you need to have a serious discussion.

I stayed put for a long time for “the sake of my kids”. Now I’m so far behind of where I need to be it’s not funny. You can’t buy more time.

If you have an allergy to shellfish, it’s best to avoid iodine. Also, if you can’t tolerate the contrast dye used when undergoing hospital imaging, you may have an allergy to iodine.

I am allergic to iodine so I stock Sea Kelp tablets. Less effective as they are lower dose but a step above nothing and better than anaphylactic shock.

This may be old school but I thought all rag top Jeeps could also be fitted for a hard top, that they were interchangeable? I don’t think they have a big tow capacity. Besides, if you got nothing to tow, why worry?

Buy what suits your needs. If you have a BOL that’s well stocked you shouldn’t need to haul a wharehouse behind you. Consider if you need more seat room for people or more cargo to haul.

I have 4WD but it’s a must up here. I also wanted something I could sleep in if the need arises. Comes from being asked to leave many a great relationship at 1am. :p

I would be far more concered about faux military/militia/LEO’s showing up rather than the real thing. There’s already enough posers out there who claim they are former Alphabet Soup and keep a Blackhawk in their backyard.

I was heading south on 127 one morning. Group of cammo/military style vehicles pulled over. A jeep was broken down. Not that unusual, 127 heads North to Camp Grayling but it was unusual to see a vehicle broken down. As I pass, I noticed Michigan license plates. Military vehicles don’t have state license plates. In any state.

Posers, not the real thing.

Ask enough of the right questions and they’ll run.

Swamp, admittedly the only IT/programmer folks I’ve ever known are co workers in their own department but they always seem exasperated at those of us who don’t have nor want the tech skills they posess.

That said, while folks like Zuckerberg or Gates tout the future of AI, do you think those huge egoes would ever develop something they can’t control? Something that could be smarter than they are?

The blueprints came and boy am I overwhelmed ! I did get drawings for slab, crawl and full basement options included so I have an idea for mechanicals with each option. Going to study these for a while before I get cost estimates. I need to learn what the water table is here is. The soil is sandy so it shouldn’t be hard to punch a well.

Handyman, this is going to be propane. I checked with the utility co. and the closest natural gas is 2 1/2 miles away. Not enough homes in the area to justify the cost of bringing in natural gas. I do have electric at the road.

Just about every full basement that I’ve seen up here leaks. That’s when I found out rain gutters are not required by code. I saw 1 home with a dry basement. They also had rain gutters.

The thought of a full basement with glass block windows is appealing, but then there’s the price.
