APN “Getting Started In Preparedness” and Homesteading Columnist
My name is Daniel Hayes. I am a 43 year old semi-retired truck driver and tattoo artist. I am a father of a 22 year old daughter, who is married and out of the house. My fiance’ Kellee is a nursing educator whom is working on her doctorate, and a prepper as well. We live in northeastern Oklahoma, and we are prepping because, life happens!
We are new to prepping, and we are just getting started; We haven’t even bought our bug out bags yet. However, we have started the stores for our food and water, and are in full swing, of getting to a place that makes us more comfortable with our preperations. We have started canning (never done it before now) and I have just started planning out the purchase and construction of a place for us to build a sustainable living for ourselves through proven techniques of homesteading. Our plan is to have a self sustainable residence in a rural setting, using alternative energy systems, and other “off the grid” techniques. We hope to build ourselves a place of residence that will offer us a little less stress of urban living, as well as, cheaper living on into the years to come. Making retirement something a little more do-able, by depending on ourselves instead of money that has no guarantees. So we are setting up a retirement home, more or less. I have been lucky enough to get to write a column for the American Preppers Network (APN), documenting and sharing my journey into being a prepper. I hope I am able to share information with you of worth and to learn from each and every one of you. I have been a member of the APN since Feb.09, 2012.
Why do I prep? Well I think that it is important that I am known, to be prepping, instead of just accepting whatever circumstances I am left to deal with. I feel as if each and every one of us have our own conclusions on what the future might hold, but for the sake of my column I feel as if I will just keep that to myself. The important thing is that I am here in the APN, just as you are. One person sharing what knowledge I can with you and you doing the same. Its much like politics and religion. There are proper places to discuss such things and this column is not one of those places. I will tell you this though. No matter what happens (if anything should happen) the goal is to be ready for taking care of you and those that you care the most about. This is essentially why we all prep. I don’t think prepping guarantees anything other than the piece of mind that we have done all we can.
with all that being said, I will leave you with these thoughts:
I CAN BE CHANGED BY WHAT HAPPENS TO ME, BUT I REFUSE TO BE REDUCED BY IT – Maya Angelou
THE OPPOSITE OF COURAGE IS NOT COWARDICE, IT IS CONFORMITY. EVEN A DEAD FISH CAN GO WITH THE FLOW – Jim Hightower
ONE IMPORTANT KEY TO SUCCESS IS SELF CONFIDENCE. AN IMPORTANT KEY TO SELF CONFIDENCE IS PREPARATION. – Arthur Ashe
